I have been submitting resumes at a lot of businesses in Brandon, however I am not getting anywhere, are there any tips/advice that anyone has for me? I'm also looking at jobs in the rural areas. I submitted for jobs such as housekeeping, production line, the hospital, and I have not received a response from any of these places. So I'll keep searching but I am getting discouraged, I'm hoping fellow ebrandonites can offer good advice. Thank you.

Could very well be the way your resume looks.. some employers will just toss it out of it looks sloppy

pick an area every day and go to the place of business and drop off your resume. That is how I got two long term jobs. Neither were advertising, but where about to.  
 
One day I did all banks  
The next day, all east end businesses  
 
I also e-mailed some. I just went through the Brandon phone book, saw companies, looked them up online to see if they had an e-mail and I did receive a call from someone wondering how I knew he was about to hire - and did get an interview.  
 
Job searching is like a full time job, you have to put a lot of hours into it.

I will do that, I have been searching on ebrandon and other websites, and my resume is professional. At this point, I am willing to work at any place, even rural areas. Thanks for your advice.

What about construction or oilfield? Interested?

Don't hand out generic resumes, too often employers deal with people who are "just looking for an income" with no particular enthusiasm about that specific line of work, which doesn't make for a good employee. Not saying this is you.  
 
Think of jobs that you would actually really enjoy doing, and make custom resumes specific to each business in those lines of work, explain why you want the job, what skills you have that pertain to that industry and business, most important explain why you think you would be advantageously employable to that business. Overall the resume will directly reflect your enthusiasm to be a long term employee at that business.  
It will be a lot of work and disappointments are inevitable, but remember that with few exception people are products of their own ambition and ingenuity to persevere.  
 
Also, make sure your resume makes it to the owner or management, can't always trust an employee to not "accidently" toss it in the trash.

They are always looking for casual cleaners. Once you get in you can start applying for other jobs.

You're not the only one. I know a few people who have been sending out and doing calls after a few days to ensure they've recover and know they're interested, and nothing. Lots looking makes it a tougher go. Good luck

is it hard to get housekeeping jobs with all the hotel & motels around Brandon ?

Since there are no events in Brandon right now, hotels aren't that busy.

Try contacting some of the seasonal ice cream joints. Tastees, DQ, Velvet Dip etc. Im pretty sure they will all be opening soon and looking for help. If you dont see any ads for them check out their FB pages. Good luck and dont give up but also review your resume.

I agree with Enfyre. I wouldn not someone this way because it sounds they will take any job for now but then they will quit because they do not like it and is not what they are looking for so they will waster the employers time

Cover letter... always make sure you have one!

I sure liked it when all you had to do was fill out a simply job application no cover letter , no resume or just got to job shadow hands on to see if you could do it .a lot less stress

if you want a lot less stress, an employer is not likely to hire you. All positions will have some sort of stress to them.

The cover letter is that important. I agree. It must not be generic. Dedicate to the line of work or even better, the employer you want.  
 
I am about to do the job search and my resume is old. I have no cover letter and my resume is stuck inside of "indeed". A good place to look . Indeed is a great search tool but do not let your resume get too old or "forget" your password.  
 
The cover letter is your hand shake. It is like dressing for the occasion. The resume is simply facts.  
 
Have someone else take a gander at your resume. Do a cover letter. I plan on doing both. Good luck.

I am kind of in the same situation as you are. I have a class 1 with a clean abstract and over 20 years driving experience in Canada and the USA. My downfall is I have been retired for a number of years (0nly 56yrs old) and really don't have any references. I owned my own truck. I am only looking for part time and difficult to find reliable/honest places for work.

on the news they were talking about how you get a bunch of education & then there are no jobs so, what kind of jobs careers should a person be preparing for ?

Focus on any of the trades for post secondary education. Lots of jobs out there.

your issue likley isnt lack of references or your break from working its likley that you are only looking for PT and honest/reliable, those two things in trucking are hard to find for sure, I had one but they are always pushing you to do more, depending on what you want i have seen adds saying they will take PT (with how many drivers they need i always wondered why they wouldn't take what they can get lol) not sure how reliable they are tho. maybe put out an add looking for what you want, week on week off or 4/4, holiday relif ect maybe you might find what youre looking for

i get that a application was easier but those types of jobs usually aren't great and have high turn over, thats why they accepted that style of applying buuut now a days with so much info on everything including resumes, cover letters ect, if an applicant cant figure out how to do a cover letter and resume, or are to lazy then tbh their application will be the last one on the list of candidates, sure they could do they job but when the employer is risking their time and money the employer naturally wants to bet on the best candidate and uneducated/lazy doesn't say best chance of a good employee no matter what job it is  
 
i also agree trades is really in demand and makes a decent wage, most are not easy or clean work but the pay and benefits can be well worth it

A couple of things we look for in an application:  
1) Be specific, make certain that you don't skimp on the details. And though we don't NEED references, people that don't provide them get put at the bottom of the list.  
 
2) Be qualified. If you have a Ph.D. in something and are applying for a trucking job (change in career), don't focus on that! It will come off as desperate, or that you're just throwing out a wide net hoping to catch something only to turn down a job offer. On the other hand, focus on what the specific requirements are for the job you are applying.  
 
3) Be knowledgeable. It's always a huge bonus when an applicant has some added knowledge of the job for which they are applying. Do research on small details that would benefit the type of work you're applying, for example, being a strong team player may not look as attractive to someone hiring a long haul driver vs. a line cook or executive chef.  
 
4) BE HONEST! Everyone exaggerates a bit on their resume, but don't put any qualifications or experience you don't have...remember, you may have to answer to the person you're applying to in the future.

You're right about finding honest companies....I know they're out there....just hard to find. Relief driving is what I'd be happy with..take a load for someone who wants/needs a few days off.

Go the Provincial building 340 9th St. in Brandon. They can give you tools to help you in your job search, including assistance in writing a effective resume, and cover letter. They can even assist you in retraining if that is something that your interested in, and know how to get government funding to assist with it (should you qualify). Very helpful. Good luck.

before my current job i did both relief and regular days off for a few O/o, I also had a break in my resume (due to kids) but it didn't take me long once i started looking to find more then enough people that needed what i had to offer.  
 
I started by contacting a few companies i had worked for before, it had been years but they knew my work ethics, from there once people heard i would slip seat and provide relief i had no issues finding what i wanted, so id suggest if you know someone you left on good terms from, try there

Not long term, but most fertilizer dealers need class 3 or 1 drivers for spring and fall for a couple of months to drive dry fert, liquid or nh3 trucks for delivery to farms or fields. Tough finding good, capable drives for short terms like that.
