Just for fun, what do you miss most about the good ol days?  
 
- I miss the days we would play outside all day and have our parents not worry about us - it helped we lived in the country.  
- my old car that was actually built from steel  
- not having my father around and not getting to know my grandparents better before they passed  
- not having to lock everything all the time and not having to worry about things getting stolen

I miss the sense of "family". We used to have awesome family gatherings where card games were played and people laughed and talked, went on the 4-wheeler and drove around with cousins,playing with the next door neighbours horses, listening to people play piano... now everyone is talking about Facebook, cellphone in hand and the latest technology of whatever... we used to all watch M*A*S*H together, now when family gatherings happen, everyone is in their own world, checking updates every 10 minutes.

Our street was only a block long with the school grounds at one end and an avenue and field at the other. On any given day (including winter) there was at least a dozen, often more, playing outside. Street hockey, tag, hide and seek, jump rope, marbles. Now the streets look barren.

I miss the sound of Dial-up haha you always had to be fast because it put the phone out of service lol

the neighborhood kids congregating at the churchyard or the Brandon Auto gravel parking lot for tag, hide and seek, or shenanigans was loads of fun. And I miss how special going grocery shopping at the old Co-op on Princess with my mom was. Great store, they had it all, including the magical parking lot grocery pick up.( Underground conveyer from the checkout to the little building in the back parking lot)

Now we just shake hands for no reason other than to spread germs :O

I guess being on the plus side of sixty and a grandpa my perspective is changing.  
 
Yes there were many things built stronger years ago or is just that the old junk fell apart and only the well built survived? There were great family gatherings. Yes we played tackle football in the school yard until a teacher caught us and only an occasional arm was broken. Yes I have many positive memories about my youth.  
 
Now let us turn that around. What is stopping us from having today being a good old day. As a Grandpa I have a choice of investing my time to make positive memories for my grandchildren. When I go to town and meet people, how hard is it to stop, look a stranger in the eye and say hello and mean it. Why not cancel satellite TV and spend an evening or two a week to drop by the neighbor's or invite someone in for coffee?  
 
Today's vehicles are more reliable. For example, Spark plugs now last 100 thousand Km. We used to replace them and points every fall. I have driven vehicles up to 300 thousand and never had the spare tire out. We can use etransfer and debit machines so cheques are getting obsolete.  
 
I guess what I am trying to say, Life is a choice. Let us make a conscious choice each day to make it a positive one for our children and grand children. At our funeral let our survivors talk about our days being "Good Old Days>"

Thanks for that perspective, Gordon - that was awesome. It's true that things change with time, but life is only as objectively good or bad as we choose to make it. Choose to make it good for yourself and others, and make the present the best days we have.

For myself the good ol days were the days when small town had an abundance of business in the town, and Main Street had a shortage of parking spots, and if a young person wanted a job there seemed to be enough for just about every one. The good ol days were the days where a mom could stay home and look after her kids if she wanted too, and the family could still make it on one income.

I like to think these are the good ol days, it's just going to take some time to realize it.  
 
For sure I have memories from the 50s, 60s, 70s ... that today I consider the good ol days, today, but I try and make each passing day a day I will remember (they don't all make the mark ) fondly in the future, as, I hope, will those I spend my time with.

the good ol days then there are some things I WON'T miss about these "good ol days". I won't miss the clinical way that some people run their businesses, treating people like numbers and not like human beings. And I won't miss the constant surveillance and scrutiny that we are subjected to. Privacy seems to be lost. Yes, we make our own "good ol days" every day but in general, society has changed a lot in the last generation and remembering those days is still fun.

do you mean you miss hearing the live bands from that era? I know I do, the old school and community center dances with live local bands were the best. Masque, The Trybe, Blind Justice, The Sons of Eve, Cold Duck, The Marksmen, The Bitter End, The Skin Bubble, Jeffery, etc.

all depends on what era you grew up in. 40 years from now, the stuff of today will be the good ole days.
