We''ve got a trip planned with some connecting flights and ending up in the states. I''m thinking it will be far more convenient to use checked bags only, especially with a short connection time. My wife is worried about what she can take in checked baggage like shampoos and curling iron/hair dryer type stuff. (I know this info is available online but thought someone with experience could give a quick answer.)

You can take hair drier, straighteners etc, just no shampoo or liquid.... at least that's what it was last time I flew

You can pack all of that stuff in checked bags. Do you mean you want to take carry-on's only? That's where the restrictions with liquids happen

That's all we use is carry-on. Roll up your clothes material is much more forgiving.  
Get shampoo/conditioner things like that on the other end. You can purchase a lot of shampoo and things like that for what you will be changed for that bag she wants check in. Plus once you land you get your bag. And away you go. Enjoy!!!!

I think you mean you want to take carry on only.  
In your carry on you can not take any liquid, gel or cream more than I think it is 100 ml. You can put your face cream, lotion, shampoo or other stuff thant you need into very small bottles. As much as you need for the days that you are on the trip. Take a very small size toothpaste tube. All of those bottles has to fit in a ziplock bag that they have in the airport which is medium size ziplock. This is what I usually do when I will be in a few days trip.

You can buy miniatures of toothpastes, deodorants, shampoo,shaving gels etc at safeways or walmart. Electrical goods are ok but nothing sharp or metal, I had my nail clippers confiscated once! So now I never take those or tweezers. Other than that you should be good.

And do not take any fruit or juice.

I flew out of Minot two weeks ago on Allegiant down to Apache Junction. Had no problem in taking a container of grapes, cheese sticks and peanuts in my carry-on with me.  
 
I always go thru security with an empty water bottle. Then, while in the waiting room, I go to the water fountain, fill the bottle with water, add a flavoring packet to the water and shake. I take this water bottle onto the plane with me.

Your flight was internal US so you boarded the flight with the fruit and landed in the same country therefore you didn't 'import' any fruit . If you are flying from one country into another then best not to have fruit, dairy or meat. Unless you check with the border agencies to see what is allowed between the countries you are flying in and out of.

Keep it under 100ml per container. We get those travel bottles at Walmart. Never had issues. Heck we do the airplane bottles of booze and never been told otherwise. Even checked by an agent and all is good.

You can take those little travel shampoo bottles on carryon luggage.  
If anything looks suspisious they will open your luggage and check, if it doesn  
T meet spec, garbage or checked luggage.

every airline will list allowable items and size requirements for carry on and checked bags. They will also list weight restriction and bag size. With Carry on you need to know your bag size and what size fluids your allowed to have. Checked bags do not have fluid size restrictions. As for food, it is is domestic, no issues if changing countries then check the web site as you may have to buy fluids after you go through security check point. You should be able to get all of the information you need directly from your airline carrier's website.
