Did anyone else watch this live? I was biting my nails off! I don't care if he did 18,000 jumps, it's still the craziest suicidal stunt I have ever seen. So many variables at that altitude to hit such a small target!  
 
Many commenters said he would not make it and were prepared to witness a horrific outcome.  
Spoiler alert: He made it.

he had a parachute on for insurance reasons. Of course he didn't use it.

He almost had to wear one due to a screen actors guild rule but they changed it last minute and he did the jump with no parachute as it would make it more dangerous for him to land in the net with one on.

The stunt, broadcast live on the Fox network for the TV special "Stride Gum Presents Heaven Sent,'' nearly didn't come off as planned when Aikins revealed just before climbing into his plane that the Screen Actors Guild had ordered him to wear a parachute to ensure his safety.  
 
Aikins didn't say what prompted the original restriction, and representatives for the show and the Screen Actors Guild did not immediately respond to phone and email messages.  
 
Aikins said he considered pulling out at that point because having the parachute canister on his back would make his landing in the net far more dangerous. If he had to wear it he said he wouldn't bother to pull the ripcord anyway.

I didn't watch the show but if I did I would have been on the edge of my seat as well. But, here is just a quick observation. He is not the first skydiver to jump without a parachute. The reason I say this is...well, because he had a parachute. Even if it was for safety reasons, he still had a a parachute. He is the first skydiver to jump from a plane with no intent on using his parachute.
