I won't try to defend this person or what he was charged with, he was not ever convicted in court, but I believe that if he was guilty of all these things his record is now wiped clean, he has paid a price which was greater than any sentence that would have been placed on him by a court, end of story for me.

Got to feel bad for the guy's family

i gotta wonder if the implications to his family is what pushed him over the edge to actually commit suicide, this way he will not go to trial and be found guilty, hard to say what actually happened but 34 charges is a lot so id guess he was guilty of some, either way my thoughts are with his family and the truck driver who has to live with the aftermath and speculation along with the loss of someone they loved

he started out his day like he normally would and ends up being in involuntarily part of someone else's suicide. This is something he will live with the rest of his life, the officer was careless, reckless and self serving in his actions, there was no reason to involve an innocent bystander. Seems cowardly to not face up to what you have done and leave a family behind to live with your shady past.

It's the best alternative he can have for himself. This is because, even if people suspect it was suicide... it won't be proven 100%. Meaning that, MPI and the RCMP would have it tough to prove that it was nothing more than a tragic accident (an example of a bad case of drivers error/distracted driving) and charges will never be formally brought up because he's now dead. Thus, his insurances would pay out and because he was still on "paid leave" during the investigation... his benefits and pension will still "kick in". ...Pretty slick, I can say without making definite accusations.  
 
That's setting aside that he never will never face trial, conviction and disgrace for himself and drag the family along through it as well.  
 
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

what is going through the mind of anyone else in times of terrible stress?  
Perhaps as traveller said, he was thinking it would be easier for his family.  
And for his fellow officers who would be forced to testify in court. Not to mention the strain of a long, drawn-out court case which would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.  
We can only hope his family and the truck driver get all the support and compassion they need.

when i say implications to his family my thoughts included what snowman said, yes thay will have to live with the lose and the story behind his death but they will now most likely will be looked after

Plus, the other driver will be able to collect from MPIC for PTSD, I would think. But how traumatic for him...

I consider this a cowardly act by the officer and also think it's abuse of the system. The rest of us pay for it in the end with increases, etc. He was a police officer. He knew what he was doing for the past decade was wrong and instead of facing the courts and taking the consequences like a man, he caused a crash - which won't affect him but many others left to deal with it. Just another instance where we hold police officers to a higher standard and find they don't deserve to wear the uniform.

If he chose to end his life that is one thing, but to use another innocent person as a tool truly is gutless and cowardly.  
 
My father was a victim in a similar scenario. A long haul trucker, one night a young man in a very tiny VW decided to end his life by driving head on in to his truck. Needless to say there was nothing left of that car and my father saw body parts strewn all over the highway. It haunted him until he died - he suffered from nightmares and panic attacks. He never was able to drive long haul after that night, he had trouble even driving his car. This young man had attempted to drive into three other vehicles that night, all of which were able to avoid the collision but all suffered trauma as a result.  
 
I have empathy if a person feels so helpless and lost that they truly feel suicide is their only way out, but to use another human as a tool is just sickening.
