Whether you loved this leader, or hated him, he chose the direction for a nation, and for better or worse the country existed under his rule. It makes a person wonder if it was a situation that was so intolerable, and crimes against humanity were being carried out against the people, why the perceived leader of the free world did not step in and right the situation.  
Another thing to think about. Have we as a nation remained quite, and not question the actions of others who have supported tyrants and murerous leaders in other nations.  
This may be one instance that American Foreign policy got it right, leave a nation to determine their own destiny.

No on else has stood up to the Americans like he did nor fell back into its grasp.  
 
While the medical system there is in the pits it is far better than most countries as fairness and affordability goes than most. It is unfortunate that he nationalized and seized other country and companies assets etc It was a lesson to the world.  
 
His rights record against political opponents was overlooked by most. It was terrible. It is a perfect example how the cold war was able to not settle a simple issue like human rights and that similar problem still is happening.  
 
Fidel and his country were burnt by the promiximity to the USA and they dealt with it the best way a left wimg dictatorship could.  
 
Subtract his suppression to his opponents/his neighborhood spying program that country could have ben far worse. Look around at the world corrupt countries with heavy weapons with internal war fair.  
 
I hope he rests in peace but I doubt it. His brother is moving into the western sphere but now with Trump who knows.

are not much in a position to criticize Trudeau or anyone else for seeming to praise Fidel-not when so many Canadians spent money to support the Castro regime by holidaying in Cuba. You don't think that a good percentage of that tourist money filtered up to Fidel?

I'm sure there are a long list of reasons as to why Cuba has become the latest hot spot for vacationing, and rum chugging alike. Being touted as one of the greatest new spots to visit for its new found safety, and open regulations. I've heard it said to be 'the new Mexico'. Yay!  
 
And like Doug said, when is the last time anyone stood up to the Americans? I don't recall hearing about Cuba making bomb raids on any middle eastern countries, or keeping wars going for 15+ years in the name of dominance over the oil economy. Or, was that the war on 'terror'?  
 
Does Cuba have their own line of FEMA camps? Are they even a real thing? Or the product of a conspiracy theory?

Are we or many other countries that much better? Look what we and the US did to natives and Japanese. We use to put people in jail because they were gay. Residential schools? Taking native kids and adopting them out against their parents consent. We like to think were much better.

Was a charismatic leader who greatly impacted his nation and region. He was also a dictator who suppressed opposition. I think Trudeau missed the mark in his tone. Generally, I don't think you speak ill of the dead, but you don't speak glowingly of despots either.  
Don, I don't think US foreign policy was to let Cuba decide its own fate, it was to isolate it and hope to kill it by slow strangulation.

Funny we have done business with Cuba since the 1800 we have had uninterrupted diplomatic relations since 1945 we do a billion dollars in trade annually Canadian banks weren't thrown out after Castro took over, Diefenbaker criticized the American embargo, we have know who this guy is since he showed up, now he died we want to call him an asshole dictator, after all the business we have done, kinda gutless I think, wait till he dead then call him out for being a dictator.

many Canadians flock to Cuba during the winter months for vacations. Spending money in Cuba, essentially supporting Castro. Canadian businesses doing trade with Cuba. And now, when Trudeau offers condolences, the world ends.

Honestly, I don't think it's good business to go around and call a countries previous leader that has passed a communist, dictator, genocidal, etc. Even tho the world knows exactly what this person has done.  
*Most countries leaders are respectful towards each other for the good of their nation, whether that's the way they truly feel or not.  
As for China and Trudeau, all I see in his efforts to mend fences are more $$$$ for Canada's economy should he succeed.

Its just an opportunity to bash Justin, my previous post of what Harper said, I respect Harper for that its what is done when world leaders die especially ones we do business with, if Justin had said anything different the angle would be he's disrespecting and politicizing the death of a world leader the day after he died and possibly ruining our business relationship with Cuba its an automatic lose no matter what he says.

Bet if Castro died while Harper was PM and said the same exact thing, nothing would be said by the Conservative supporters.

Harper's a different person than Trudeau, and would not say what Trudeau had said.

This statement clearly lacks any praise for Castro, unlike our idiot PM. It sends condolences to the family and thats it.
