Has anyone had any luck with a particular type of grass seed? I have tried 2 different kinds and no luck, both were guaranteed results in 7 days grows in all conditions. I put down fresh top soin in the fall and planted the seed within the past few weeks, I have tried putting a thin layer of peat moss on top to keep some moisture in, and I even tried a starting fertalizer nothing seems to work.

found its like watching water try to boil.. tryed the high cost stuff nada,,, went with the cheapest big bag of seed I could find ... looked the other way for a while and I soon needed a a baler lol.

We are blessed with sand. It dries quickly and wind blows sand which cuts off new growth. I mixed lawngrass seed mixture Ruth fall rye. Kept a sprinkler running almost steady. Rye grew quickly and protected grass  
 
We now have a healthy lawn

A friend of mine is in the turf industry and I asked him when I was trying to start grass. He said if the night time temps are dropping below 13 degrees it is too early still. He said if it did germinate during a warm day it could die off at night.  
 
Obviously you might get lucky with a bit of it, but this was his advice.  
 
Once conditions are right, covering the area with burlap makes a huge difference. Holds the moisture in and creates a bit of a greenhouse effect. Grass will grow through it and you can pull it off later.  
 
Good luck, I usually end up spending more money on seed, fertilizer, more seed, than I would have spent on sod.

Seed along with fall rye. spread seed on the dirt and work in very lightly with a rake. Cover with a thin layer of peat moss. (Burlap for small areas) Hand water frequently with a spray nozzle, not a sprinkler. The seed must remain wet for three days before it will germinate. If you can time the seeding with a few days of rain it will make the job easier.

Heat and water, water. I planted some and water continuously . At least three times a day.

OP how long ago did you seed? I seeded about 3 weeks ago thinking it didnt work. Low and behold I walked out this morning to see green shoots have emerged from the ground!

Gordon and whomever, what variety of lawn seed do you find grows best on sandy soil? Our lawn looks terrible this year after the heat from last year.

Don’t remember exactly. Bought at Canadian Tire. For sunny areas. I have a standpoint dedicated to yard. I usually have three sprinkler running and move them every couple hours. I keep threatening to install a underground system with timers.
