I do not have a green thumb but I like to try. I bought some gladiolus bulbs tonight and wonder if its too late in the year to plant them?  
 
I planted some last year and they bloomed, but they did not come back this spring. I was hoping they would so perhaps I did something wrong

When flowers done let green growth die off and the dig up your bulbs to store in a cool dry place.  
If you leave bibles in the ground over the winter they will freeze and go mushy. That is my experience.  
I’m not super experienced with this bulb so am also interested in what anyone else has to say.

is to cold for them to survive outside. When the foliage starts to die down in late autumn lift, dry off in a frost free area and then store cool but not below about 5c overwinter.

Plant them now. Everything is slow this year so they will be fine. Like everyone said, dig them up in fall to use again next year.

My grandmother was an award winning glad grower....she worked hard at keeping her stock beautiful though.  
 
Yes, they have to be babied - they need to be pulled each fall, dried properly and some even suggest dusting them with baby powder or other desiccant. They need to be stored properly (though I never could get this right so I obviously am not expert.)  
 
I tried for years to grow them in Brandon and just never could get it right. Sad because growing up my grannie and her contemporaries would travel to all the small towns with their beautiful flowers to all of the flower shows. She had a closet full of ribbons and trophies - it was so much fun to watch her get ready for these shows.  
 
Now stargazer and fancy lillies, they were my thing!!

I am trying to grow because I remember them from my grandma's yard too! I had no idea how much work they were and although she is gone, appreciate her green thumb even more.  
 
I have fond memories of glads and raspberries at my grandparents.
