B.MacIntosh said "I'm hoping someone here can help me out with a gardening question. We're wanting to start a garden from scratch and need to get rid of a lot of grass. We hope to actually plant and seed our garden this year so glyphosate [round up] seems to be the most likely option for our purposes. The problem is that we bought round up from a local retail store previously and it did very little. I don't know if that's common or if what we bought may have been frozen. We carefully mixed and applied it according to directions. Would we have better luck buying it from a farm supply? Any recommendations would be appreciated. "
Roundup that is sold for garden use is a very different formulation and strength to that sold for farm use. Typically glyphosate can be frozen and then thaw with no loss of effectiveness.
I’m not sure if a ag supply will sell glyphosate to a non farming customer. They likely shouldn’t.
It’s a very safe product if used used responsibly and following label instructions. There is a lot of misinformation out there concerning the safety of glyphosate, much of it is not founded in good science and is inaccurate. It’s probably the safest herbicide available if used properly and respected. You should also consider the correct growth stages of target weeds before spraying any herbicide.
Note some weeds have resistance to glyphosate
A 10l jug of 540 formulation sprays 15 acres at full equivalent rate. Most homeowners don’t have 15 acres to cover or the equipment to safely and accurately apply the product.
