soil testing

You need to know what you want to test for and how to complete an appropriate test. You also need to know how to read the lab report when it comes back and what environmental criteria you are comparing the numbers to. If you don't know how to read the lab report, it's a waste of money.
Generally you can call a lab (like ALS, AGAT, Bureau Veritas, Element Technologies, etc) with what parameters you want to test for (be sure to tell them you are testing soil and not water) and they will ship you out a cooler and the supplies (where its bags, jars, bottles, etc) as long as you provide a credit card. Then you would ship it to them (be sure you ship the samples at the right temperature - depending what you are sampling for) and wait for the report.
If you are unsure of what to sample for, it's best to ask an environmental company to help you out, but it won't be cheap. There's lots of environmental companies in the province, a quick google search will help you decide who to call. Good luck!
