I have a 12 foot long flower bed in front of my south facing deck that I would like to plant some sort of shrub in. I tried planting 5 globe cedar trees in it about 3 years ago, but they all died. Not sure if it was soil conditions, or not enough water, or both. Since then, I have just planted a few flowers in the bed, which have made it through the summer. It is a mostly clay based bed, with some compost manure added a few years ago. I have also added some black dirt to it, as I thought maybe there was too much manure and that may have been what killed the cedars.  
 
Anyway, I was wanting to try planting more shrubs there. Was thinking about trying the cedars again, or potentella plants, but wondered if anyone knew of a shrub that loves heat (prefer flowering, but not necessarily).
