Pond?

Just looking for suggestions. We moved into a new house with a good sized pond in the back yard. I have four little ones so I am leary about leaving it as is. I did see on a HGTV show about putting some wire mesh across with stones on top and having a pump shoot water and run through. I think it looked cool and would be safe but I don't know what kinda mesh to use that would be strong enough if children decide to venture in. Any ideas?
