A friend of mine was curious to know what this weed is. I figured that I would ask here as I really don't know.

Looks like Storks Bill?

It's stinkweed

It's quite definitely not stork's bill or stinkweed.  
 
There are a couple of possibilities, which we can narrow down somewhat before it flowers.  
 
Does it have a definite odor when a leaf is broken? If so, it is Artemesia.  
 
If there is no odor, then it is in the buttercup family- looks like an Anemone. Exact ID dependent on better photos or flowers!

It has the smell of a fragrant spice of some sort.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're dealing with a Eukaryote of some kind.  
 
I agree...better pictures would help a lot.
