Hunting credentials

i have the opportunity to go hunting with my girlfriends dad and would be an awesome expirence. but i dont have any of the credientials to actually shoot a gun or hunt. were do i get my hunters safety course. and is this what you need to actuallly shoot guns. or i need my pal? and were do i get that. can anyone help?
