The onion buns at Suburban restaurant were my favourite. I’ve tried recipes on the Internet to try and replicate them with no success. Anyone have a recipe that tastes like them?

Have you tried the onion buns that safeway makes in store they are pretty good...

Those buns were made by Sally’s bakery back in the day and sold to the Suburban. Most of their recipes were also used by Kuipers. Maybe you call them and ask if they can make them?

I miss that place, remember the buns very well. A close second used to be the ones from the Dutch Mill bakery when it was on Rosser Ave.  
I think I heard that Kuiper's make them, will have to drop in there one day soon.....but everything from there is just too good to come out without a whole bag full.

Where is this restaurant? Never heard of it and I have lived in the area for over 40 years.

The suburban was at the corner of 26th and Vic, on the south west corner where the clay pot is.

The Suburban closed down in the late seventies.

My mom was a cook there for many years,i happen to have her cookbook,all hand written,starting from the 40's, i will take a look,i remember her baking at home and taking there,maybe bread she didn't take, but maybe the buns,i will check and post what i come up with.

The suburban closed in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. Anyone know the exact year?

That would be awesome! Dutch Mill was awesome too. Kuipers might be a good idea. It closed early 90”s I believe

It definitely closed in very late 80's early 90's. My husband and I had our engagement supper there in January 1987. AS for nicer restaurants, there was also Kokonos & Red Fox back in the day. We also used to go to Beef & Barrel still do. Beef & Barrel is the only one left from that time frame.

The Venice House.

The Red Fox was where Barnacles used to be, right? I used to love going to Kokonos restaurant and on Sunday nights the bar used to compete with the North Hill Inn for cheap drinks. And yeah, who could forget the Venice House on the NW corner of tenth and Rosser?! The food was amazing and the ambiance of sitting in those huge barrels was so fun when I was little!

Anyone know what ever happened to that huge barrel? Used to be fun to be in there.

Yes the Red Fox was before Barnacles and after the Twin Pines. Venice house was on the corner of 10th and Princess. Miss the Venice House as well. I also remember going to DK's on the corner of Vanhorne & 18th they had the best burgers

Yep! Sally’s was originally owned by the kuipers and named it after their daughter, then Russ kirwan bought the bakery and its recipes. They made so many yummy things I miss!
