Daily specials at restaurants

What makes people get "the lunch special" over one of the menu items?
Is it convenience, or because it is something that is differnt *special*?
I am just curious because latley, I have seen some pretty weird specials. Never realy been a fan of getting the daily special myself, but used to sell quite a few in my waitressing days.
So what kind of specials do people like getting?
