Healthy Eating on a Budget. Can it be done?
4/23/2009 at 4:51 PM
There is a debate in my family. Would it cost the same if I only bought healthy foods and absolutely nothing with additives and no convenience foods?
I say it's pretty difficult given the price of fresh produce and things like meat.
There are six people here to feed starting out at age ten and continuing up from there. Everyone has a fairly large appetite around here.
I'm wondering what your opinion is? On a limited budget, can a family be fed the healthy, Canada Food Guide way?
If you think so then please share some advice and tips about the things you do to cut corners but eat well. Maybe you know some inexpensive recipes as well. Also, what do you send to school for lunches that is healthy and isn't going to come back home, uneaten?
I would like to see us eat healthier by including lots of fruits and vegetables in our diet and comsume more milk products. Also, I'd like to increase our protein intake.
As a side note, I don't buy convenient, ready to pop in the oven food, and junk food is a rare thing. Possibly chips on a movie night. I bake everything like cookies, etc. Everyone here has a sweet tooth and chocolate cravings. (I know that probably means they are missing something from their diet.)
