In a perfect world, restaurant owners should pay well enough to those servers who go above an beyond and patrons are not obligated. Then servers are not burdened with the mental aspect of waiting to see how they are 'graded' by a customer. Self worth should not be measured by any amount of cash or by any other person. Servant hood is an honorable and very high position (like gas jockey, custodian, or cab driver) ...depending on your perception of it whether you're the server, a patron, or restaurateur.

while there is nothing wrong with being a server they are paid what the job dictates (especially if money doesn't equal self worth)  
 
why is serving a minimum wage job? because you need no training to start and the majority of people can be trained to do it, simple as that, and yes i have been a server

In the states not every restaurant pays waiters a decent wage, making tips a big part of their wage. Here servers get minimum wage. While I will tip a bit, unless the service wasn't great, I will not tip big. Why do servers deserve tips when their are many other jobs that work just as hard or harder and don't get tips?  
 
I work in a daycare which is essentially a service, I can have long, stressful days. I'm also doing something very important, taking care of people's children. We don't get tips, in fact lots of parents don't even say thank you or show appreciation. So why should it be expected for servers to get tips but not child care providers??

don't tip at restaurants or hairdressers. I was never a server but I worked as a cashier at McDonald's, my wage was minimum, I was doing my job as it is supposed to and when it was busy I was at the till and getting their food and we were rushing. I had 11am to 7pm shifts weekdays and weekends I never complain , these days people complain about everything and expect everything. Before become a cashier I was cleaning the lobby and have tables, floors, bathroom, trays cleaned even in rush hours. I wasn't dragging my legs to work.

If I got this right, she took a job from which a portion of her income comes from a pitifully low wage $2.50? And the other, much larger portion from a completely optional tip.  
 
I don't think she has any cause to be upset at anyone but herself, and the restaurant owner.  
 
Yeah, it sucks that she got nothing out of the table, but honestly, if you take a job that relies exclusively on an optional "bonus" based on performance, and then get angry and take to social media when that option isn't taken by the customer (and it sounds like they had cause), whos the real idiot here?  
 
If the kitchen was the cause of her loss of earnings then again, that's something that needs to be corrected as policy within that restaurant. My tip is based on one thing and one thing only, quality of service, nothing else. It's not my responsibility to subsidize the restaurant's terrible wage.  
 
What we have here, is a system by which the restaurant owner has little to no responsibility to pay his table staff, meanwhile the public gets shamed like in this story for opting out of giving a bonus for bad service which is completely their perogative.  
 
It seems like the idea of tipping has shifted from: leave an average tip for average service, large tip for exceptional service and no tip for poor service to: tip no matter what cause the waitress has to pay the kitchen and she can't make ends meet without my tip blah blah blah.  
 
Like has been discussed in the brandon wages and cost of living thread, unless you are handicapped, everyone is in control of their own situation in life. If the job sucks, and you can't make money, find another job. Maybe if this happens often enough, idiot restaurant owners might find themselves short on staff and actually having to pay a wage. Imagine that.  
 
Like i've said before in other similar threads, I almost always tip, unless the service was particularly bad, but I'll be damned if I'm told I HAVE to tip for bad service or to avoid being shamed by the waiter/waitress and to subsidize the restaurant staff wages. That's BS.

I think its time to do away with tipping and restaurants should pay a living wage.  
 
More and more restaurants are now automatically adding %15 tip, all the while saying if they pay staff more they will have to raise prices, hows that for circular logic.  
 
With these tip pools now which are just an excuse to steal the waiters tip money, to supplement the poor wages of the kitchen staff and what not, they have to pay the percentage of the tip into the pool even if there is no tip.  
 
Now before all the right wingers come down on these people for being too lazy or stupid to get better jobs these are good honest jobs that somebody has to do, not everybody can be a lawyer brain surgeon or even a plumber.  
 
President Franklin Roosevelt quote in 1933 when the US brought in the minimum wage.  
 
“No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.” (1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act)

I have worked in the industry. I think the problem is that it is expected, good service or not. A tip is supposed to be based on the service received. Most people in the industry assume that they are suppose to get tipped on every bill. However the purpose of that tip is motivate a server to go above and beyond. Because I was in the industry I always leave a tip, but I have been basing my tip on the quality of the service I received. I have traveled around the world and in many countries tipping is not in their culture, it is a very North American thing. Some Countries gratuity is automatically added to bill. If you are travelling and you like to tip always make sure to check if the tip is included already or not.

Understand what the point of a minimum wage is if some states don't enforce the minimum?

I am against tipping in general, but will tip if a server of any sort (in any industry) goes above and beyond what they are paid to do. That said, what is missing from this particular story are a couple of key points -  
 
Did she try, in that hour, to pacify the table? Did she keep coming back to see if they needed refills, and or apologize for the delay - did she ever try to contact the management to try and speed up the service? That is missing from this story. If she did not ever try to see if there was anything she could do, then she did not deserve any tip.  
 
Now, if she tried to rectify the situation and got no where, then it was indeed the managements' fault for not running a better service and these customers are a$$hats.  
 
One other point that seems to be overlooked - there was supposedly a tip automatically added onto this bill as it was an eight person table. From what I read it that is blurred from the receipt, so if that is the case it is very misleading. I'd be ticked too, if I was being forced to wait for a meal that long but forced to pay a tip.

are these restaurants adding a 15% tip on the bills in brandon?

There is at least one that I know of that has at least tried this for large groups, because if the bill is a few hundred dollars a server can end up paying 10 or 20 dollars into the tip pool.  
This is becoming common in Winnipeg too I had it added there once %15 and they where quite pissy about removing it, I'm old school %10 used to be an acceptable tip but now with the tip pool its more like %7 for the server, so they started campaign that %15 to %20 is the norm, but I feel with the price of restaurant food %10 is still a good tip, but I'm a guy that remembers when you could buy a cheese burger fries and a coke for $1.50

what many people dont know (and the us servers like to leave out) is that the reduced min wage only apply s if their tips exceed the states min wage, what that means is that if its a slow day or the total of the tips didnt equal min wage then the restaurant does have to make up the difference so they should never be without the min wage  
 
and i do think tips should be based on the whole experience, it is the waitresses job to make sure her tables are looked after including checking the quality of the plates before they are served and even steering people away from a poorly executed dish that management refuses to take off the menu ect, that is what being a waitress is and even at that level they shouldnt automatically expect tips

i get that its nice to be nice but why is it only some luxury item sellers deserve a tip?  
 
i didnt tip the guy who sold me my hot tub, its a luxury item, or the girl who sold me my over priced fancy jeans either...plis wait staff do get tips at almost every table so its not considered nice or a treat to them, it an entitlement which is part of the issue imo
