Are there any Amma's out there that would be willing to part with their Vinarterta recipe? I am have a bunch from the internet but would like an authentic traditional recipe. The one Im using does not call for Cardamom, but my other one does for both the filling and dough. Also, I have not been able to find a good recipe for the icing!! I'm in the middle of making my first one and would like to finish it off with the yummy icing!! Any help would be appreciated!

with a recipe because that is one of those things that I dread seeing each holiday (kind of like mincemeat tarts) Had a recipe offered to me once and my family all said to me "do NOT take that recipe please"... To each his own...LOL  
 
But the ones I have tried had an almond flavored icing, very similar to fruit cake icing?

Most are almond or vanilla flavoured. I will google a fruit cake icing and see what that looks like.

I googled almond glaze last time I needed the recipe and it seemed like what I had when young. From interlake area I think it was just almond flavour water and icing sugar.

Google the Icelandic spelling "vinatarta" and you will get a lot more opions than under any other spelling.

Traditional icing for Vinarterta is Marzipan although the recipe I've always used (Grandma's) is a moist enough cake without icing: plus I just plain don't like marzipan.

This is my recipe. The cardamom is a must in my opinion for the traditional flavour. As far as icing it that is a preference I guess. It's something that is usually never done.  
However, you could use this buttercream recipe. It's mostly to add the almond flavour and a little extra something creamy.  
You've probably already iced yours but here it is anyway.  
 
Butter Cream Icing  
• 1/4 cup butter (soft)  
• 2 cups sifted icing sugar  
• 2 Tbsp cream  
• 1 tsp each almond and vanilla flavoring
