Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on country style weddings and if there would be interest in renting a barn for weddings if one was available in the Brandon area?  
 
Our family is in Rural MB (Within 30-40 minutes of Brandon, and we have a big old barn located in one of our farm yards. With some work, we could create a beautiful spot for Ceremonies and with even more work, we could convert the loft of the barn into a venue to host receptions.  
 
Just looking to see if there is any interest before I start the big job of refurbishing the barn and yard.  
 
What are your thoughts?!

too far from brandon for most people

I think that is too far out and I am pretty sure someone already offers this type of rental. I don’t remember where but there is someone that does this already close by

Something along these lines exists already, we checked into them for our wedding next fall. It's a gorgeous venue. Wouldnt hurt to have another place like this around though, I dont think I'd depend on it for income solely but a nice little side hustle if you already have the site.

What direction is it from Brandon? Do you have a hip roof barn/horse barn/pole shed? A hip roof barn could be nice. Most that I have heard of in the area don't have that, and it is good to have more options. Perhaps you could throw it open to other functions as well.  
 
I think it could work. Depending on accomodations, you may have to be willing to provide some. You may also have to look into things like wiring being updated, etc. to actually host a paid function. These types of updates might prove too costly. Do your homework!

I second this place, it’s a beautiful location just north of Brandon. The couple who run it are very helpful and accommodating!

Meeting the requirements to host weddings as a permanent venue means a significant investment in all areas. And if your your barn doesn’t have plans with and engineers stamp the Liquor Commission will need that too.

A couple of other things come to mind that I don’t think have been mentioned....  
 
Invest in installation of running water with modern bathrooms...nothing nice about being dressed in your wedding finery and having to use porta-potties, especially in the dark! Been there, done that, not fun.  
 
If your barn is an old hip roof style, your thought of turning the loft into a reception area is nice however please keep in mind that guests with mobility issues would have difficulties getting to the upper level. Again, I speak from experience...even a short staircase can be a huge challenge to an elderly grandparent or someone confined to a wheelchair or use of a walker/cane, yet they want to be a part of the festivities as well.  
 
Check out Firefly Acres (I have only seen their website and it looks beautiful but I understand no modern bathrooms) and also check out Valley Gate, north of Alexander (absolutely stunning views but no facilities i.e. buildings, bathrooms, etc. at this point) and see if you can improve on what already exists. Distance from Brandon or another centre with accommodation may be a factor but if you create a beautiful venue with outdoor areas for photos, congregating between ceremony and reception, etc. you may be able to create a winner!
