There was an article on cbc news yesterday about vehicles speeding on the Red River norther of Selkirk, anyways to cut this short this little excerpt caught my attention

30 cm = 12 inches

I have been as low as 8" of solid ice driving my 1/2 ton on the ice. I usually wait till 12" and more. Like anything you need to be cautious as ice conditions can change especially on the river.
