Best and Worst Canadian TV Shows
2/11/2007 at 1:51 AM
Back in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's, Canadian shows were hot on the US networks. My favorite CDN show, "Night Heat", was always winning the ratings in its timeslot on CBS. It aired at 11:37pm Central, constantly beating NBC's "Late Night with David Letterman" in its timeslot. Many other Canadian shows fared well, including Sirens on ABC, CBS's Top Cops and Due South, and IND's ENG and Street Legal.
In the late 90's, Canadian TV exports suffered, with the likes of ER, Friends, Raymond, and Law and Order dominating international TV. Most Canadian shows were also poorly produced, and cancelled within the season.
In the past year or so, there has been an upsurge in Canadian exports on US TV, including DaVinci's Inquest (beating Family Feud and Judge Mathis in the overall syndicated ratings), Degrassi, Falcon Beach, and now Corner Gas. Little Mosque on the Prairie has also garnered attention on CNN.
Its nice to see Canadian TV making a name in the States, and even beating hit US shows on the netlets (did you know more people watch Degrassi than they do One Tree Hill?).
Lets try something here: What is your all-time favorite Canadian show? What Canadian show did you think was an embarassment to our country?
My fave: Night Heat
My Least fave: Katts and Dog AND Bumper Stumpers
