Suspend the 30km/h school zones

Just figured if there are no children at the schools there is no reason to have everyone slow down during school hours. Thoughts?

Meh. Who cares. You drop 20km for a small amount of time. If it effects your commute to the point where you’re late at work, you need to leave earlier. If they cancel it, great. If they don’t.. I really don’t care as it doesn’t effect me that much.

so why not here?
I think there will be a lot of people who are having a hard time just living, why punish them with a ticket for going thru a school zone at the regular speed? Just my opinion.

Should be left as is or when schools finally reopen everyone will have to readjust back to the lower limits. In these times I think that we have a lot more to worry about than raising a speed limit!

we do have more to worry about now!! The point is..... people are suffering mentally right now, why add to their worries by giving them a speeding ticket when school is out and possibly not going back in September????

That would be the same as speeding in any other part of town and receiving a ticket? Just cause it’s a school zone doesn’t make it any less crappy to get a ticket. There should hardly be any traffic out at this point anyhow.. besides essential workers and out to get necessities.
If you pay attention to all traffic signs there’s no reason to get a ticket. If you speed through a school zone because schools are closed and you ‘forgot’ that’s your problem for not paying attention to obvious posted traffic signs. *shrug*

To not drive dangerously with excessive speed thereby avoiding a ticket then isn’t it.

Schools have been cancelled for the rest of the year and playgrounds closed as well so there really isn't a reason to slow down. Brandon adjusts for the summer so i'm sure we can handle it if for some miracle schools do reopen before September

Not that huge of a deal imo but suspending it and/or suspending enforcement has my vote

the signs are legal stating times and dates when enforced. You can not just make a statement saying its not in effect unless you remove the signs or replace them.

It really isn't a big deal. Just slow down for the next 3 months. It really won't save you more then a few minutes at most.

can bag the signs, it's easy enough to do!
I think that 30k zone around a high school ridiculous! If students this age do not know how to safely cross the street our society is in big trouble!

Winnipeg’s aren’t suspended. The law is still in place, though Winnipeg Police have said they won’t be enforcing it:

When the Winnipeg news came out, I asked the question locally whether what was said in Winnipeg would apply here. Below is what I received from a Brandon Police Service spokesperson on March 26:

“We do not have photo-radar vehicles here in Brandon like they do in Winnipeg to effect any new protocols.

We do not have any extra school zone enforcement planned. This is always conducted at the start of the school year, and in response to complaints from the public throughout the school year.

Police have responsibility to respond when Municipal, Provincial, or Criminal Laws are broken. The COVID-19 Pandemic doesn’t change that; however we are able to prioritize our responses.

Police do not have the authority to alter the speed limits. The 30km/hour is in effect at school zones.

I hope this answers your questions“

Is such a odd topic considering the whole COVID 19 happening. First stay the heck home, second if your concern is that of slowing down for all of 4 extra seconds to get where you’re going I feel for you. And thirdly people are dense and to switch this up and around on a continual basis is ridiculous, I mean the people complaining obviously can’t control themselves for 9 hours a day for 9 months, how would constant changes not be disastrous lol

The question is, is a school zone outside of the school year an innapropriate area to drive the posted speed limit that we deem safe for 90% of the roads in Brandon. The 30km/h limits are to protect children. But currently, like in July and August there are no children.

Given the attention span of the average driver it is best not to keep changing speed limits in any given area. Leave them the same year round. People need to slow down anyhow.

I completely agree, they should never have implemented them in the first place. What happened to "look both ways before you cross the street"?

A school zone should imo remain a constant 30kmh year round or Brandon drivers will forget.

It is a school zone and the 30 kmh limit would be best left permanent.

driving 50 in a 30 zone while there is no school in progress is dangerous for Pete's sake! Especially driving past a high school!

I would think this is a non issue. The limit doesn't apply outside of the school year. Still in effect or not, I don't imagine we'll see many, if any, tickets issued for this infraction at this time.

Smendz... When did you get your ticket for speeding in a school zone? You did get one, right? That's why we are having this discussion?

Just because we are having this pandemic does not mean its ok for people to break the law!!
People don't even slow down when school is on
so I have noticed,,so no difference now either.
take the safety of children into consideration

This whole thing to me is kinda like arguing over what colour of socks to put on while a severe thunderstorm is passing over.

Totally get that between all of the changes lately and this temporary bit of snow that some folks might not be feeling like their most positive self at the moment, but to me energies are so much better focused on how one can raise others up or help someone out than for threads like this to keep spinning in circles.

Consider a post in the “local heroes” thread, the thread on how folks are keeping busy or the thread on what others are binge watching. Consider helping to answer a question that someone has asked in a post. Consider starting a new thread on what life in Brandon will look like on the other side of this or a new thread swapping ideas on how to make a difference. Consider FaceTiming/Skyping a friend or family member. Consider looking up one of the restaurants offering free delivery and surprise someone with lunch. Consider spoiling yourself with the same!
We're all living through something so unprecedented together and while that's been going on the forums have really seen an uptick in activity on both the posting and reading sides. Thank you for your part in making sure they’re playing as constructive of a role as possible with the amount community check-ins we're seeing!
