Safeway joins "charge for air" trend

A very heated discussion ensued on eBrandon a few months ago when one local gas bar started charging for air. FYI it looks like some time over the last couple of months, Safeway gas bar has started requiring a couple of quarters to start their air machine as well.
It probably wouldn't be fair to expect any for-profit business to provide a free service if it wasn't revenue positive for them in some way. Is it only a matter of time before this is standard practice, or will there always be some stations that believe it's a way to drive other kinds of business?
