Rent a car Advice

I am taking a week long trip this summer to the U.S. Considering renting a smaller, comfortable car (maybe a convertible) to save mileage on my own larger vehicle. There are just two of us going so we do not need a huge vehicle.
Can anyone recommend where to rent from, what type of vehicle, or if renting is worth it?
