'surging' Cavalier ....

2002 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
My car 'surges' when I put the fan to defrost. Every other position of the fan is fine, but when I switch to defrost, the car surges. We have just had the heater fan replaced, and for the first day, everything seemed fine. Now today, the 'surging' is starting again. It wasn't warm enough to warrant turning on the a/c but even just putting the switch to defrost causes the problem. It doesn't happen while the car is revved up ( while driving ) but at an idle, I have to either turn the a/c off ( if it was on ) or to turn the switch away from defrost. Ideas ?
