to sell or not to sell

ok so here is the problem... my car has recently had transmission problems, every time i take it to get repaired my car shows no sign of any problems... it occasionally fails to lock into reverse, but never on days that i need it to happen.
well i would like suggestions on what i should do... my car is a '99 ford escort, low kms and has never had any problems in the last 4 years i have owned it
should i get a new transmission, sell it now or sell to a mechanic that can fix it themselves, any suggestions to point me into the right direction would be great
