advice wanted about purchasing a vehicle please

OK So... I have a ford car, and it has issues... It has lost all the transmission fluid in a very short amount of time, and is not running very well.. I am assuming this is a huge problem, perhaps a seal? I don't know, but I don't think it is going to be worth fixing...
So, My question is, has anyone had experience buying a used vehicle? I am probably wanting a van or suv with 3rd row seating, not wanting to pay a lot, and I want a place that offers financing, where should I go? THANKS!!!!!
