Tire pressure ?

Sorry to be a pain but maybe somebody could give me a heads up here. I`ve always driven older cars with a 15" tire max & have finally bought a new vehicle. I noticed my one front tire was looking a little low so went to put some air in it. I am very guilty of letting the garage do my upkeep lately, there I said it. However when I looked at the tire it said 44 lbs max (16" 60 series). I am so used to 32 lbs psi 44 seems huge, is this the norm now? Just seems really high, input anyone please.
