Toyota North American head “not totally” convinced recalls fully address unintended acceleration problems

Toyota North American President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Lentz went on national television earlier this year claiming Toyota’s unintended acceleration problems had been completely solved by two separate recalls, but the North American executive backtracked on his claim today on Capitol Hill.
Following Toyota’s second major unintended acceleration-related recall, Lentz appeared on the “Today” show to assure the American public that the company’s safety problems were behind it. When asked if the two recalls – one for faulty floor mats and one for sticky gas pedals – would solve Toyota’s safety problems, Lentz responded: “We’re confident that we have a fix for that. Between those two things, this will be under control.”
However, Lentz backtracked on that statement today on Capitol Hill. When asked if he still believed that Toyota’s unintended acceleration problems were completely solved by the company’s most recent recalls, Lentz answered, “not totally.”
When later asked if Toyota had completely ruled out electronic glitches for its recent wave of unintended acceleration claims, Lentz couldn’t give a definitive answer, saying only the company continues to investigate the situation.
A smoking gun has yet to emerge linking defective Toyota electronics with unintended acceleration, but it sounds as if Toyota’s stance on the subject isn’t as strong as it was just a few weeks ago.
