Brake life??

I had all my brakes changed on July 30, 2009. I don't do a lot of driving nor do I ride my brakes.
Since then, there has been a lot of brake dust and the brakes are now squealing almost as bad as they were when I had them changed.
How long should brake pads last? My guess is a lot longer than they have so far.
