We picked up our 5 th wheel from storage, after hooking up and not going very far, the trailor came unhooked and dropped down onto the truck, which has caused damage to both truck and trailor. Question is if we put a claim in to autopac will we loose merits? Not sure what to do!

I would think you would lose merits as you would be at fault would you not? Being new to the 5th wheel scene I make sure to put the lock in the hitch to make sure that it stays together.

Your first accident, they might just put a 200.00 surcharge on your drivers licence and lose no demerits, just depends on your driving record. Call autopsy and ask them, they will tell you

I was as well, but only got a 200 dollar surcharge, but it was single vehicle only. Maybe that was the difference?

No you won't lose demerits your trailer is insured differently than a vehicle. Had same thing happen to a friend and all they had to do was take both to autopac get assessment and pay deductible. Phone autopac and ask.

Well went to autopac , and result was loss of 5 merits , not a great outcome

where you can receive a lot more legal advice for free.  
 
How is that working so far?

you know, depending on the amount of damage, sometimes it's better to get it fixed on your own. figure out how much money you will spend on the additional fee for your license and insurance (especially if you are now losing your discount!) over the next 5 years as you try to earn back those merits, plus the cost of your deductible, and see if it's actually worth it to go through MPI. sometimes it ends up being cheaper to fix it out of your own pocket.
