We had a '78 Mercury Marquis with the same motor and it hauled our 16ft travel trailer with no issues when we were kids. Couldn't tell you the weight of the old camper unfortunately.

as long as its in good running coldition. The other key factors are how long is the trailer (feet) and is it a 1 or 2 axle trailer?  
 
The one thing you have to worry about is the tongue weight of the trailer and can the cars rear suspension handle it. The single axle trailers usually have larger tongue weight which is bad for you.

the trailer has a very low tongue weight at 240lb and it is 18 feet long twin axle  
so sounds like it might work

I know those engines well.  
 
They are a square engine meaning they have a 4" bore and 4" stroke.  
 
They have good torque but not a lot of horsepower.  
 
It will tow fine unless you are in a hurry accelerating.

Something else you have to consider when towing is a "trailer brake controller" inside your car connected to your brake pedal. This device takes a lot of the weight of the trailer off your brake system by putting a percentage of the braking on the trailers brakes.  
 
Also you should consider an equalizer towing hitch to take a big partof the tongue weight off your hitch. Without it, could affect your steering and handling of your car to a dangerous level. You said the tongue weight is fairly low so maybe not an issue. cheers

I'd be mainly concerned about the brakes being up to the job. Older vehicles didn't have the best brakes to begin with.

What transmission does it have? The AOD overdrive tranny of that vintage were not very strong. The C6 was great.
