Hi there. I just got my learners today And im looking into some options on getting a used car for cheap or a place that will allow payments with bad credit.. Thanks in advance

i know its not always the most attractive option but id definitely suggest buying used. especially if youre young its just a method of transportation. with ebrandon and kijiji listing used cars its easy to browse and find one that fits your needs and price range ( I used to have to buy the weekly autotrader haha ) also do you have bad credit or no credit? id suggest getting a credit card and using it but be strict on paying it off right away. build up a credit score and then if you want a nicer car in a couple years you wont have a problem getting a loan. ( although id still suggest a monthly savings to yourself as "car payments" and then youll have the money ready to go instead of needing a loan) just my personal opinion because that's whats worked for me. good luck!

that's understandable. most people don't mind if you want to get it checked out by a trusted mechanic and I definitely wouldn't buy anything without a fresh safety. unfortunately buying used is (almost) always buyer beware.

You can get dud cars everywhere! It is the chance you take buying used - from a dealership or privately.  
 
There is a reason the owner got rid of the car in the first place.  
 
We bought a used van from a dealership and had nothing but problems with it starting less then 2 weeks after we bought it. and continuing until we sold it.  
 
We did tell the buyer everything we had fixed on it and what we thought would go next.  
 
You can take your select purchase to a mechanic for them to check but they can not promise you the car will be fixit free for length of time.  
 
We have bought a brand new car off the lot and it has now had the same part replaced 3 times in the first 4 months!

If you have bad credit, be prepared to pay if you borrow. It very likely won't be worth borrowing in the long run, it would be cheaper to buy a beater for cash and spend the money in repairs.  
 
There are better ways to rebuild credit than borrowing. Have you paid all your old debts? If not, start there. If you've paid your old debts, then borrow SMALL amounts and pay them as agreed. There will be no quick fix.  
 
edit to add an example of SMALL amounts: get a credit card with a $500 limit. Pay it off every single month, no exceptions... if you don't eat that month because you've overspend on the your credit card, let that be a lesson to you. Specific to the card provider to NOT increase your limit, or else they will keep increasing it and you'll get yourself in trouble. /edit  
 
There are a lot of decent used cars out there, depending on what you need it for. Many people get rid of their cars not because they're bad, but because they want something newer and nicer. Not all old cars are unreliable either - my husband drives an 18-year-old car to and from Shilo every day and it still runs great and will likely run for a long time yet - we're hoping to hit at least 300,000 km on it!  
 
You might have more luck getting a good used vehicle in Winnipeg. Like others have suggested, get a trusted mechanic to check it out to hopefully weed out the ones that are in face bad.

What's your budget?

well if i were to buy a car privatly that needs a little fixing up.. 500 max.

After reading through this I'm hoping that you don't go ahead and try buying a car of any sort. The cost of buying a car is just the start of being able to afford a car, and when you mentioned $500 I thought we might be talking of buying a car way back in the 1970's or 80's. If you've got bad credit now, I think your in for a world of hurt by wanting to own a car. Your young, slow down a bit, get some money saved up, and then think about it.  
 
I could be wrong, but it's sort of a "been there, done that" story.

I am thinking you are jumping in way to fast. What about insurance, gas ,repairs.?You won't get much for 500.00. Put your money away. Get a bus pass or taxi occasionally. People will take advantage of you some time. So plan ahead for groceries get a big order and taxi it. Otherwise walk if you can or take the bus.

in actually not young lol im almost 30. Had a rough life. I need to find a car before i get my actual licence since i work in town but live 30 minutes away. But thanks tho i do appreciate the honesty

Thanks for the reply, guess I just figured learners and 16 years old, my bad. Still feel that you should take you time, not sure if your job would allow you to build savings if you were to use public transportation. I would be a but careful with the idea of using payments on a car to help rebuild credit rating, the wrong car, whether bought from a dealer or privately, can end up a money pit. Keep a close eye on the classifieds and keep saving, sometimes there are opportunities for those who wait.

great to hear of the news you received your learners licence. Best advise is to shop around, owning and maintaining a vehicle is a big commitment.  
You should shop around for the perfect vehicle to start with, take into consideration cost of insurance, gas prices etc.  
If you are just wanting to impress someone stop reading any further.  
A vehicle is a very handy tool to have, but the responsibility that goes with it is the main thing. If you want to show off well expect alot of tickets, alot more walking or taking other means of travels such as a Bus. Just because you have a learners doesn't mean you are the only one on the road, and it can't happen to me well get that out of your head.  
 
Check out all the dealerships in Brandon, each dealership such as Murray's, Brandon Chrysler and Fowlers go over any used vehicles before they put them on the lot.  
Remember all salesman can be pushy as they get so much for commission on a vehicle and will try to talk you into a newer vehicle with low payments etc.  
Be cautious and take a reliable adult with you.
