Is this legal or just a tragedy waiting to happen?

    Did the OP ask if good jeeps had mirrors on the doors or body? No. He asked if it was legal to have the doors off. I didn't find that hard to follow at all, and it doesn't seem like anyone else did either.  
     
    Why are you even bringing up about where the mirrors are?  
    If it's for a joke... Haha. If it's to get people worked up... I am.

    for many years no top and no doors. Was harassed by people who believed the doors would stop a semi if I was t-boned, no door made can stop a semi  
     
    It is fun and you know people are wearing their belts.  
    Have to still have mirrors and most mount hem on the door hinge or sports bar.  
     
    Also spent a few years in Winnipeg and never had the windshield up, wore safety glasses to keep the cops happy.

    Today I was driving on the perimeter hwy around Wpg - late afternoon - rush hour traffic on a Friday - I was "surprised" by the volume of traffic - I was driving 90 in the right hand lane - no point passing as there were at least a dozen vehicles in front of me and I was being passed every couple of seconds by vehicles in the left lane - went over a very rough railway crossing at the same time as a Jeep Wrangler passed me - the young female in the right side back seat was bounced towards the opening - OMG - a couple of more inches and she would have been out of the vehicle being dragged along by the seatbelt - thankfully I could see an arm pulling her back. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. If this vehicle were to be T-boned at an intersection by another vehicle travelling at 50 - the outcome would likely be awful.  
     
    Just seems incredibly reckless to me after witnessing a near tragedy today.

    Just because it is possible to do something doesn't mean it should be done. The flattened windshield seems more dangerous to me.

    no different than a motorcycle in reality, same number of bugs accumulate in the teeth and you have to watch out for slow birds.

    It's called a windshield for a reason. The only time I'd feel uncomfortable about the wind shield being down would be on a highway, where big bugs and even small stones can really hurt! Otherwise, on city streets I see no reason why a person couldn't have the shield down....unless (as mentioned) the driver was wearing safety glasses, or even sunglasses. Jeeps are built and reinforced much differently than other cars, which is why the doors can come off without having to worry about side impacts.

    The IIHS side impact rating is 'poor'. I can't remember if that's 2 or 4 door.
