Just wanted to get the groups feedback. Is there provincial legislation that protects an individual from over charging by a repair shop?  
I had approved a repair and had a call to add additional $500 or so to the repair but when I went to settle up the price was the original amount plus the $500 and then double the two amounts.  
Doing this repair with no consent.  
What is the solution now? Give me your thoughts.

Basically, they need to provide a written estimate for repairs over $100, they need to have authorization (and a record of that authorization) for repairs, and they cannot exceed the quote by more than 10%.

Do you have your car back? Do they have your signature? Did they show you the old parts? They absolutely need your signature and must show you the old parts. Any changes to the initial quote must also be signed off on. I believe it is up to them to prove that you confirmed the extra repairs. On the other hand, if they have an enclosed compound the Garage Keepers Act allows them to hold onto the vehicle until the bill is settled, either by you paying it or the bill is determined to be illegitimate. Not sure of the procedure for you to go through to show the repairs were unauthorized.

Was this a repair done from an autopac claim or was it a repair you were just paying for out  
of your own pocket?  
Believe it or not, when you make a claim through autopac, don’t just assume you will pay your deductible and be done. There can be betterment charges, owner to authorize charges, etc. These things should have all been in writing and signed though before any extra repairs took place.

I have a place, I used to go to, that lied to my face.  
 
Took my car to a guy I can trust. Even when he says "It needs ...", I hustle down and "Show me".  
 
That said, I am a "car guy" and know what all the phrases mean, the lingo, which is the better way to do something.

Can you go back and talk to the guys at the garage  
Find out what repairs had to be done for the $500.00.  
 
I would find another garage for repairs.

Somethings missing here.. what was the double charge for? They must have told you as can’t think anyone would pay without asking questions

if it was a motor and tranny job then an additional $500.00 might not be out of line, ...  
 
but then your saying they doubled up on the original estimate plus the another 500 on top of the extra 500 already.  
 
something is amiss, even a shady operator would not be so blatant as doubling up on everything.  
 
there has got to be more to this story.
