I got a new set of tires on my SUV on Friday. I asked for All Season tires and they fitted M+S tires. Before I left I asked the person who fitted the tires "why he had fitted m+s tires when I asked for all season". He told me that all tires were now M+S.  
My question is, is that true or is that a fob off?  
I thought M+S was mud & snow not all season.

All season tires have a m + s rating now.  
 
A tire manufacturers scam in my opinion. Pretty much the only way to get away from m+s is to go to a high performance tire. Not a good idea for most SUV's.

No season I have never heard of that

no season, first I heard of that one. TheScotsman that is not a bad nic name for them. Yet they are far better that the summer radials the industry replaced. Although the summers still would be quieter, smoother riding and better in rain than todays entry or mid level all season IMO. I have no clue how the old summer radials would compare to the new all weathers. I have had little to do with them.

I always made that mistake. 16 months ago I needed two. I asked for what I "thought" I wanted and that is what they sold me.  
 
Fast forward six months and it was time to replace the other two. Fortunately, that first place had tried to cheat me out of a couple thousand dollars so I went where I should have gone in the first place.  
 
So, I tell Bruce what I want. He disagrees and explains why. Tires have a rating, in thousands, as I recall. This is all insider lingo. He let me choose, but, I ended up with better tires, better suited to my driving needs.  
 
He had them on hand because he had ordered them for his son's car, same as mine, for the same type of highway driving. His university son was away for six weeks, so, he could get more in time. Bruce is not a cheap man.  
 
So, tire dealers will give you what you ask for, but, is what you ask for what you want?

M&S stands for “mud and snow” and is usually found on all terrain tires, but can be found on some all season tires. For example a Goodyear Wrangler SR-A (which apparently is discontinued) is an all season with M&S as well.  
 
What kind of tires did you end up buying?

The m&s symbol on your tires basically means nothing. It shouldn't make the tires more expensive. Most all season tires have it on them. That also doesn't mean that they are good for winter either. If you want to have a good winter tire it needs to have the snowflake symbol.

I just put on the rear of my truck in the summer are mud and snows. When I got them the guys at OK in Carrol said as they had the snowflake symbol on them, I could go through the MPI tire program and change all 4.  
 
I didn't do it but now wish I had,those tires are way better than my original 2 other brand M&S that are 25% worn. The tire didn't cost much more than the old "cheaper" brand, and the lugs are like comparing a tractor tire to a racing slick when they are new.  
 
Hopefully they last and I wear them out instead of getting a non repairable flat like the last 2 tires.

I should say there are a few different styles  
All season, All weather (snowflake symbol) All Terrain, and All terrain (snowflake symbol). It makes sense to have the m&s symbol on the tires that are rated for winter traction with the snowflake on it. It doesn't make sense for the manufacturers to put it on the all seasons because all seasons just do not have the traction for snow or mud.

Mud and snows that are still on the truck do not have the snowflake symbol I was surprised when I looked for it. It looks like all M&S tires can't be the same winter rubber compound specs, or be approved under the same testing to get the symbol you need for MPI loan approval.
