Detention Section Supervisor ? Job Description

Overview

Commissionaires Manitoba is seeking a skilled leader for the position of Detention Section Supervisor at the Brandon Police Service Detention Section.

This role is responsible for overseeing daily detention operations, supervising staff (6 FT, 8 PT, and 8 casuals), and ensuring the safety, security, and well being of arrestees. The Detention Section Supervisor is a working supervisor who performs regular detention guard duties while managing personnel and operations.

The position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to manage high-pressure situations while maintaining professionalism and integrity.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate detention guards.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training.
  • Support staff development and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staff maintain professionalism, punctuality, and proper appearance.
  • Address staff conflicts and support a respectful work environment.
  • Act as liaison between detention guards and BPS Detention Section leadership.

2. Operations Management

  • Oversee daily detention operations and staffing levels.
  • Prepare and manage staff schedules and shift coverage.
  • Maintain operational efficiency and adherence to procedures.

3. Safety & Security

  • Ensure the safety and security of arrestees, staff, and facility.
  • Monitor the CCTV systems and secure restricted access points.
  • Ensure 15-minute physical checks of arrestees are completed.
  • Oversee arrestee intake and release processes.
  • Ensure the proper handling and storage of arrestee?s property.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and hazard-free environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws, policies, and security procedures.

4. Incident Management & Emergency Response

  • Respond to emergencies and security breaches.
  • Apply sound decision-making in high-stress situations.
  • Ensure staff follow proper intervention procedures.
  • Handle disciplinary actions involving staff.
  • Support crisis management and conflict resolution.

5. Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare, review, and approve incident reports and daily logs.
  • Ensure accurate and complete notetaking for evidence purposes.
  • Maintain detailed records of detention activities.
  • Ensure timely submission of reports to appropriate parties.

6. Training & Compliance

  • Identify training needs and report gaps in procedures.
  • Ensure staff understand and follow all policies and post orders.
  • Facilitate training programs and ongoing development.

7. Administration

  • Manage scheduling, timesheets, and administrative documentation.
  • Ensure hours worked are accurate and certified in a timely manner.
  • Maintain updated post orders and operational procedures.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are available for detention operations.

8. Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain effective communication with staff and management.
  • Coordinate with the Brandon Police Service as needed.
  • Address detainee complaints and grievances professionally.
  • Foster positive working relationships across all levels.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED (required).
  • Minimum 3 years? experience in enforcement, corrections or experience in detention.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.

Certifications

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector).
  • Adult & Child Abuse Registry Checks.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Conflict resolution and crisis management experience.
  • Knowledge of detention operations and procedures.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Familiarity with communication radios and security technology.
  • Ability to work under stress and in challenging environments.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and cultural sensitivity.

Physical Demands

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Occasional running and physical response to incidents which may require a physical intervention with arrestees.
  • Must be able to wear a protective vest and other PPE, as may be required, for the duration of the shift.
  • Repetitive movements.
  • Periods of sitting.

Work Environment

  • High-stress, fast-paced detention setting.
  • Requires alertness, physical readiness, and adaptability.
  • Interaction with diverse populations.
