Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of Zenith Paving. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, cost control, and strategic financial planning to support company growth and profitability. The Controller plays a key leadership role in managing cash flow, job costing, budgeting, and internal controls within a construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain general ledger and ensure accuracy of all accounting records.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Develop and maintain financial reporting systems specific to construction/job costing.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to ownership.
Job Costing & Project Accounting
- Oversee job cost accounting and monitor project profitability.
- Review project budgets versus actual costs.
- Work closely with project managers to ensure accurate cost tracking.
- Analyze labor, materials, and equipment costs.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Monitor financial performance and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist leadership in long-term strategic planning.
Cash Flow & Treasury
- Manage cash flow planning and forecasting.
- Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable.
- Monitor collections and lien processes if necessary.
- Maintain banking relationships.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations.
- Manage insurance, bonding, and licensing requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits and tax filings with external CPAs.
- Maintain internal financial controls.
Payroll & Benefits Oversight
- Oversee payroll processing (including certified payroll if applicable).
- Monitor employee benefits administration.
Team Leadership
- Supervise accounting and administrative staff.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
- Train and mentor team members.
Qualifications
- Bachelor?s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction.
- Strong knowledge of construction job costing and WIP reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Eclipse, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
