I was wondering where I might find a few adult sized garment protectors or ‘bibs’? Not wanting to spend a lot.

Any home health store etc or online

use a tea towel and attach some ribbon or anything like that with safety pins...(for women, just tuck the ends under the bra straps) works like a charm

My Dad used these. I just bought ones from Dollar Store. Worked great.  
 
if you are doing anything through homecare you might get them through them though Dollar Store was way easier to do.

Might have some on their racks. Every once in a while they seem to get items like that donated.  
 
When my aunt was in a nursing home she needed actual tops (sleeveless) to cover the front so I sewed some up for her. I always felt that even though the adult was incapacitated (physically or mentally) a bib was a bit degrading for them. They're ADULTS & at least a top that looks like a sleeveless blouse / vest allows them to spill food on themselves with some remnant of dignity. I'll attach a picture of one. I made hers much looser around the waist so it would fit over whatever clothes are being worn.  
 
If you know someone who sews they might be able to whip some up.

Most of the elderly today used napkins especially men would put a napkin in their shirt collar.  
 
My dad didn't find them degrading at all. Better than that then spilling stuff on his shirt.  
 
And the above picture is ok with women but not suitable for men.

in my post, there are bibs like the one I posted for MEN & they look like a regular western-type shirt. And having gone through my father, mother, aunt & now sister dealing/dying with/from Alzheimer disease, the one thing that always stuck in my mind was how devastated they were to be given BIBS. Alzheimer patients might not remember much but as I was told frequently by my relatives with Alzheimer's, they were NOT kids & didn't want to be treated like one by being forced to wear a bib. So you're extremely lucky that the elderly person you were dealing with wasn't upset with having to wear a bib!! Maybe it's a generational thing I don't know but when you're dealing with someone coping with Alzheimer, you try to minimize the everyday events that annoy the patient because it's hard enough coping with the memory loss etc. without trying to put them in an item of clothing that will irritate them. Pick your battles.

These are awesome! Bought them for our entire family to help our shirts from getting covered in our lunch!
