I notice a lot of emails that appear to be fake from people asking about items in the classifieds. This has happened lots before but seems to be much more lately. Is this happening to other people as well?

but the other way around. I was looking for some used plywood & called the # given in the eBrandon ad & the message said the number was disconnected. Also have had messages asking about something I never even advertised in the classified. I guess we have to be careful with everything.

Hi Brandon018,
Thanks for your interest in using the classifieds. There’s nothing I’ve seen that indicates any kind of meaningful increase but one should be mindful that these kinds of reply submissions to ads are present. I always appreciate having suspected scam messages forwarded to me in case there’s more I can learn to further optimize the system, but generally :
- one should only deal locally and in person. If someone is offering to send payment without seeing what you’re selling it should be a red flag. Claiming to be from the area but away doesn’t count
- if one is offering more than your asking price, another red flag
- never click on links in messages sent, never give out personal account or bank info in response to messages

Sometimes Gmail gives "warnings" (see picture). Through careful interaction at first, I have found that these are actually legitimate local people. I have no idea why Gmail marks these people as spam.

Is a "warning" like I posted what you are seeing?
