Suggestion when "Getting Taken via Classifieds"

Ok here is the thing I am absolutely addicted to eBrandon.ca classifieds, when I had some stuff to sell it seems to be the common statement from folks at the office, "Just put it on eBrandon". Although it does take a bit getting used to, folks in the Westman Area make it actually fun to sell on eBrandon, so much so that I decided to make my first purchase from eBrandon. The item I was wanted outlined the product as "Slightly Used" and that was only being sold because it was a second one after the person had received a gift of an equal item. I analyzed the device, I even when into the store to have a look at one at the store. The store was offering the device at the same price as the person was selling it, so I offered the person what I considered to be a fair price in order to save a little money. I figured a slightly used item would still have a lot of life in it, and as such really would meet my needs until I found a more permanant solution anyways.
Well I contacted the person via email, and after a day or so the person responded with a "meet in the middle price" compared to what I had offered. Of course something I would have expected. I pointed out the fact that the item was on sale at a local store with the exact price as the person had listed the item. The person then agreed the indeed the price I offered was fair.

I assumed because their price was of equal value, they must view the item as close to new.
I went and picked up the device however I was given instructions NOT to ring the Door Bell as there was a small child, and that I should simply knock. I got to the home, and pulled into the driveway (it was dark as I had arrived at 9:20). The owner met me on the Steps of the home, and suggested that there was a child sleeping. This had made me have some reservations as I couldn't test the device, which I was indeed a bit disappointing, and I asked the person why they didn't use standard built in device that normally would be in home like this one as it was a new home in a new area. The explained that they didn't like those particular devices and preferred the model being listed on eBrandon. So I figured new home, this person doesn't seem like the person whom would take advantage of others. Boy was I wrong. I got home, only to find that this device was so loud and broken that anyone who would have plugged it in would have walked away from the deal. I immediately emailed this person back and outlined my displeasure, and I called them this morning and left a message(Still trying to be mindful of their child)However I have not heard back from this person, and I find this in poor taste. I am wondering what others think? I truly believe that this person had intentionally meant to mislead me, and I really thought this couldn’t happen in a town the size of Brandon. I know I am being a bit vague about the device in question, I am really trying to protect this person at this time, and I am only looking for advice on how folks would handle it if faced with the same situation.
