Everyone has rights

I am taking this course about individuals with disabilities and we watched a video showing people who used to be institutionalized. The way they were treated was awful. In this video we watched several people who use to live in these institutions spoke out. Up until about 40 years ago people institutionalized were forced to get sterilized and get several other body parts removed to prevent the "feeble minded" to conceive.
This thank god doesn't happen now days, but society still has a hard time "accepting" people that are different then them. I work the individuals with disabilities and sometimes get looked at when we are out in the community. Some people can't seem to look past the disabling condition and look at the person first. I love my job and want to be an advocate for them. I am glad very few institutions still exist and people with disabilities are able to live in the community. I just wish peoples attitudes would change about how they perceive people with disabilities.
