I am curious. If a person does this all the time would they not be classified as a business?

Only if they choose to seek out licensure...

If somebody purchases used, and resells at a profit, I believe they are legally obligated to report that as a capital gain on their taxes, and pay the appropriate income tax.

I highly doubt anybody ever would do that, and I highly doubt anybody would ever get caught doing it, but I do believe it is law. (A very stupid law in my opinion, relating to used goods)

Some great feedback.

Now suppose that seller lists a product (any product for example sake) for $500 and keeps a list in case there are no shows are people decide it's not what they want once they see it. Caller #1 decides to buy at the $500 price and states that he might sell his (that he was replacing), so he asks the original seller for her list of potential buyers. The same day that caller #1 buys the item at $500, he calls the next person on the list and has an interest in meeting up and discussing their "mutual interest". Then buyer (caller #1) offers to sell the same item he just bought hours ago - but at double the price ($1000), and says if the person doesn't buy it then, it will be higher yet when he posts it.

Is this savvy entrepreneur? A slick businessman? Or downright sneaky?

I suppose if I was the second person, I'd be rather annoyed. But I can see some peoples' point about smart business as well.

If your caller #1 can get the seller to give him.that list of interested persons (as the seller i would not give it to him) and if he can then talk one of them into paying him double the original seller's posted price-then i guess more power to him. As an interested party that wanted to buy for 500, if i were contacted by someone and invited to pay 1000 instead...i would almost certainly tell the caller to take a hike. He can post his own ad and find his own buyers at his price.

People buy and sell stuff all the time. If you sold something too cheap and it turns back up on kijiji, that's not the buyers fault.

Some of the most unbelievable stuff really does happen...including this. Guess some people are just that bold. But to each their own. Others are right, really - a person can choose not to buy from that person selling with huge markup, and this is how business can work. To each their own, I guess.

So some guy bought your item and you gave him a list of people that called you and didn't buy it, and he called and offered the item at double the price?
Why would anybody who didn't buy your item at 500 be possibly interested at 1000 if they walked at 500 doesnt make sense, I take it none of them bought it did they?

Correct me if I didn't get the scenario right

No...seller gave list of callers to the first caller who bought the item. Then that person called the next person on the list and offered it at double the price. No idea if all declined or not. First person offered it at double the price did not buy it though.

Isn't this exactly how the world works.. The store you buy your food from buys the stuff for less to sell it to you for more...
If I get the price I asked for for an item why would I care what happens to it? Is someone just mad they could have sold their item for more?
Weird lol. People do this all the time.. I don't see anything wrong with it.. If someone wants to spend the time searching for deals and re posting and dealing with buyers to make a couple dollars. Yay.
If someone lies and uses emotion to get something free or cheap just to turn around and sell it I think that is a whole other thing and pretty low. But just to look for deals and re sell items heck no. There are those picker shows that do this .. wow. Weird. People really think that is wrong?

that some people think this is wrong! If I buy something and then am able to repost it and sell it for more, than obviously the original seller could have sold it for that too. Just like the saw at the restore. They sold it for $200 and the person who bought it resold it for $400. Wouldn't that mean that the restore had it undervalued instead of the person reselling is jacking people by asking for more??

I bought it, tried it and it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to re-sell it. Whatever price I want to ask is my business and if someone buys it, great!

It is mine, no one's business what I sell it for.

Who has time to keep track of all this buying and selling going on...

Why would you give the buyer the other potential buyers contact info?

Makes me wonder about buying on ebrandon... is it really that safe then.. meeting at the police station doesn't really mean much if your contact information is being given to others without your consent.

That's like Wal-Mart taking your contact information and handing it to Superstore just incase they want to call you about shopping there one day too ...

Instead of being critical why not give credit where credit is due. These individuals scour online ads, attend auction sales, yard sales and flea markets in search of a bargain that they can flip for a profit. This is whats known as motivation and ambition as these individuals are creating their own employment in order to make a little extra money for their household. Is it sheer laziness or jealousy that makes one condem another for trying to make a little extra money??

Re the other angle that some folks want to explore ....

Generally speaking the spirit of the free unpaid ads is that folks are selling their personal used stuff. Thats the expectation when one's browsing the ads and on behalf of the average user I take the responsibility of maintaining that seriously. With that in mind, have to make the distinction between someone re-selling the odd item that they make a profit at with someone that does it [b]en masse[/b].
The odd item like this is cool (who's to say that they didn't just happen to buy that item at a bargain, turn out to not have a use for it and then decide to sell it for fair market value).

If however someone is for example going as far as going to auction sales and regularly actively seeking out items that they buy in quantity with the intent of turning around and flipping all of those items in the classifieds that gets into the realm of business-like use and isn't what the free ads are intended for. One of the reasons the classifieds are so successful is they haven't become 1/2 ads of that nature. I do from time to time receive reports when its known that someone's abusing the ads in this way. There are advertising options for businesses and business-like folks that I'm always happy to discuss through the Contact/Support link at the bottom of the site.

Thanks as always to everyone that's a part of making the classifieds what they are today, whether you're a buyer, seller, a handy reporter that sees someone they want me to look into that they feel isn't quite right, or just a general sharer of feedback that I regularly get through the Contact link!

Every company has a loss leader that draws you in on price alone. Go and ask Walmart why they put 2 liter bottles of pop in front of the door. It draws you in and although you came in for that, they secretly hope you buy something other than that in order to increase the overall margin on your order.
BUT this has nothing to do with the OPs comment.
The OP is sour over people being enterprising enough to recognize the true value of something, negotiate a good deal, possibly give the item a facelift and re-selling it for a greater price.

BOTTOM LINE IS: They are not doing anything wrong. Not one thing....
If you don't want to sell at a bargain then don't
If you can afford to sit on your product and wait for a better price then do so
If you want to command a higher price then market it properly and do your research
BUT you are not to be sour about someone else that did all those things.

NOT ONE THING IS WRONG WITH WHAT THEY ARE DOING OR DID
