I think the thing to think about in this matter is whether accepting a $25 gift card from Loblaws (which likely translates into about a $10 cost to them in actual product) is a sufficient amount of punishment for a price fixing scheme in which Canadians overpaid to the tune of perhaps thousands of dollars in bread items over what is said to be a minimum 14 year period. Bread is a staple food that everybody eats. Households with children may go through several loaves of bread each day. So if you are OK getting bought out of a situation that has you paying many hundreds (or perhaps even thousands) of dollars over a 14 year period in a price fixing scheme, and want to let them get away with it over a $10 gift-card buyout, then go ahead and take the buyout. I don't really care about the $25 gift card myself. I would prefer to sign up for a class action lawsuit, and make the penalty of fixing prices on essential food items extremely punitive, and as a deterrent to these companies that sell us foods, so that I don't end up paying thousands of dollars more on other schemes down the road. Personally, while I would like to get some money back, I don't really care who gets the money. If a lawyer wants to take on the fight on his own dime, then all the power to him for dragging these Loblaws sleezeballs through the courts, and making them pay billions of dollars to settle such deceptive schemes. In the end, it looks like you can likely get your $25 gift card and also join in on the action. If everybody joined the action, I would imagine it is possible that some day you could see some recovery of perhaps upwards of $100 each person. But also remember, this is not an ordinary class action. It was filed by an individual that represents the homeless population and those that are impoverished, so I think you might just see a push to have some of the benefits of this class action go to many of the folks who really need it: perhaps even food banks. Join the class action. I can say that regardless of the amount of the end payout, watching Loblaws squirm through this will be worth your time.
