End of Home delivery. About time

Attached image of news story but sure lots of others on it.

It is about time home delivery was ended and everyone changed to central boxes.

All the rest of us do.

Home delivery was a privilege that fee received and all of us paid for.

I'm both happy and sad about the end of home delivery. I do think that the reduction in the amount of mail over the years is good reason to discontinue home delivery, along with the ever growing debt that Canada Post continues to require bailouts for. I am concerned about mailbox break-ins as I know of people who have had rural boxes have experienced break ins regularly.

Good for you that are capable of going to the community mailbox and climb over the snow drifts the City plows leave behind just to get your mail. For some folks, this a huge effort, it not impossible. This is sad news for many folks. But hey, as long as you are happy/

difficult, but people in smaller centers seem to be able to do it, as well as people who live in places that already have community boxes. In smaller centers you don't just have to go the the corner for your mail, you have to travel to the post office. I live in a town and have to travel over a mile to the post office.

You're coming off like you're sore about the fact that there was home delivery, like it was put in place specifically to ruin your day or something. I have home delivery and hate it. I'm glad they're switching to community boxes. There's no need to act the victim about this.

At least at a post office, the walkways are cleared. If Canada Post is going to go strictly community boxes then they need to make sure they are accessible to Everyone, even in the winter.

Hate hearing about the situation this will put some in and I agree that celebrating it being ended is a little bit much but I think it all comes down to dollars and cents of Canada Post offering the service broadly. The numbers that have been out there sound like an existential problem for CP, this is an unfortunate sacrifice to keep them going.
Maybe a private business opportunity waiting for someone that would fill that gap for anyone with mobility challenges in the same way the private sector steps up with supports to help with necessities like groceries or snow shoveling when a family member/friend/neighbour isn't able?

I enjoy home delivery myself but could easily change into community boxes since I am able bodied. I do worry about theft from the boxes. You also have to think Canada post has 55,000 employees and with a transition from 4million remaining home delivery’s to community you can almost guarantee a loss of jobs of 5-10,000 employees. And with the amount of job loss from automation and immigration it is getting harder to get even low paying jobs in a lot of areas without post secondary schooling. I fear if the loss isn’t from people doing early retirement we may end up just paying them to stay at home rather then to pay there wage to work,

consequence of having a post box number, as a delivery address rather than a physical address, is that the banking system will not allow you to send funds abroad, as I found out trying to send gift money to UK family.
Presumably as a result of money laundering regulations you can only send funds if you have a street address. There are also some online retailers who will not ship to box numbers, despite being safer than having a package left on the doorstep.
Following the spree last year of breaking open mail boxes in various post offices, Neepawa P. O has now changed the lobby lock so our keys are no longer able to access the mail boxes outside of opening hours, and we have not had our key deposit returned as of yet.
Would seem that even more items will be going to courier companies, rather than to the post office.

Moving from Brandon where I had home delivery by default to a small town without makes me think a better option might be actual post offices that are staffed from like 6am to 10pm or something like that.

Those community boxes always seemed like such an easy target for thieves and they can't really hold all that many parcels to begin with.

The post offices used to stay open 24/7 for mail box access but then became an easy target for the thieves again, so limiting the hours and keeping them staffed seems like the only option ?

A also wonder about a delivery option for large scales residences like seniors homes or large apartment blocks over a certain size to reduce the amount of boxes at the depot, making them more efficient for their coverage areas ?

In the city even with the community mail boxes you still have a physical address, not a box number.

I used to live on the north hill with a community mailbox and my mailing address was still 123 Random St, Brandon Mb.

but not in rural areas, where there might be an emergency services number on a particular road, but try putting in a quarter, township, range, meridian figure in as you bank address, system does not allow it to happen.

You still use your address like normal, with the community box it just gets rerouted to your community box number. I've lived in cities that have this system ion place and nuever gave a post box njumber as my address, just used my street address.

I have home mail delivery and get no parcels from Canada post because the mail carrier doesn't even attempt to deliver them he has the pick up notice already filled out

The mail boxes are inside the building. Box number is your apartment number.

Now if post office would get their act together and deliver mail to the right address no matter where.

So so many mail delivered wrong or lost

I just received letter mailed in March from Winnipeg looked like it was sitting a puddle. Stained crushed stepped on. Now I realize why the other mail didn’t get here.

Small towns/ small centers you know your neighbors & feel comfortable asking for help when you are disabled or find walking difficult. In the city... totally different story.
