There is no prohibition in normal proceedings to protect the identity of an alleged assailant, only to protect the identity of victims. In this case, the victim was in fact a minor child (17 years old), and so I feel not only was the University negligent and punitive towards a legitimate complaint, but all professionals have a duty to report child sexual abuse, which this technically could be considered.
The policy creates a chilling effect on free speech, which is a charter right as well. Telling victims of assault that they can be suspended or expelled if they tell their experience is ridiculous! There was some talk about it being a Manitoba workplace policy but students are not in that category. " |

You put it down precisely how I am thinking as well. This Victim can in fact go for punitive damages against the University now. What a very unprofessional shadow this is casting over our University. However, their media coverage yesterday - where they apologized, did show they were taking responsibility and admitted to making her sign this - under duress I must add.
Also, it seems the Brandon Police had been informed, and they found this case to be "Inconclusive" - now that too is concerning!
And lastly - reading some of these comments, [Be a man! Take the lick! Be a REAL man!] are also very concerning to me. Men need to get with the program, they do NOT need to take abuse either. There is no excuse to be smacking, hitting, bashing anyone, anywhere, anytime!!! Period.
Also, with the new Bill 15 - about the Domestic Violence issue - it does pertain to BOTH Male and Female Victims. So guys, stop your red neck behavior/thinking, and get on base with the new laws, mindset.
