It's terrible. They need help. I hope everyone gets out ok. I can't imagine.

They said half the town has been evacuated ...no flights out right now and " the road is compromised & cannot be used "..
Is there only one road out ? ?
This is downright scary as hell ! ! Those poor people !

Hoping no one loses their life over this.

Sad to say though - once the imminent danger is over, this will be a boon for the area. Sure the insurance companies are going to scream bloody murder - but soon there will be THOUSANDS of new jobs opening to help rebuild this city.

Not to mention fires like this are really natures' way of clearing itself up, the areas' vegitation might just start with new vigor.

Have to look to positives.....

as far as I know there is only Hwy 63 in and out of fort mac. My brother is up there as well as many friends, many families I know have been evacuated, over 30, 000.

This is scarey, and for those of us with family in the fire's path, its even worse. My thoughts go out to all those in Fort Mac. Hopefully they are able to bring the fire under control soon.

But yes, it will definitely create jobs after all is said and done. Homes, and other buildings will need to be rebuilt. Lets hope it's less then more, and lets hope all that lose their homes have the insurance to cover.

May they all stay safe in this moment of tragedy.

From friends in Edmonton who have reported dozens of buildings already gone and some have sent pics of the solid traffic leading out of the city. Luckily rescue workers of all sorts are there to keep it from becoming chaos.

I have friends in Calgary who have reported not being able to reach loved ones by phone yet as well.

God speed everyone and bless the people who are putting their lives on the line to fight this fire.

Yes, everyone is on mandatory evacuation. the other problem people are looking at is the gas situation while on the road...

As of yet, there has been no lives lost, thank the gods....lets hope it stays that way...tomorrow is going to be worse then today.

It's gut-wretching to read about. I couldn't imagine how scary that must be.

Hopefully most of the town can be saved and there's no loss of life.

Thanks Brenda, I have heard from my brother, as well as many other of my family and friends from up there. They are safe, so far no injuries or casualties, (yet) that they know of...lets hope it stays that way.

there has been total destruction of some of the neighborhoods. unfortunately, but like many are saying, they will rebuild.

its horrible, and today is going to be just as bad if not worse then yesterday with the weather they have coming...Lets everyone, hope it rains. it may not stop the fire, but it might just make it a little easier to control and hopefully put out.

my thoughts go to all the families of Fort MacMurray

As bad as it is up there with the fires, yes it is sad and devastating for some. I wonder how many are relieved if they were on tough times, no job and mortgage payment looming.

But it is a fair thought. There are a lot of un or underemployed people in that city due to the oil downturn.

For some this may be a very harshly disguised blessing.

The city is practically empty now other than emergency crews. I am simply amazed at the relative "calm" of the evacuation - that is just crazy to see that much devastation of a city yet only minor injuries so far. Let''s hope it stays that way.

Let's help Fort McMurray!

I am currently organizing a garage sale of our items and donated items to raise money for Fort McMurray and surrounding areas through the Red Cross. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated. The garage sale will take place May 13th and 14th at 116 Fraser Cres and any remaining items will be disbursed amongst our local charities. Our total monetary donation will be made through Sobeys who is matching all donations and a donation receipt will be posted! What I don't understand about our country is our military. We have over 60,000 military members and how many are Fort Mac? I look at other countries where military plays a large part especially in European and Asian areas where disaster happens and the military moves in to help asap. Why are we not deploying our own troops to fight these disasters. They are getting paid no matter where they are, instead of some base they should be working the front lines of our own country to help where it is needed. The Red Cross should be aiding our military instead of the Red Cross being a front line supporter in bringing in aid to those needing it. We take care of everyone else but ourselves it seems.

The rally at the old zeller's is only looking for baby and toddler clothes. Blankets, diapers, wipes, bottled water, pet food, baby formula and toiletries are the main items needed

34th street & Victoria (North West corner) parking lot today from 10-6.

They are gathering supplies and necessities to send to our Canadian neighbors who have lost so much....

I took 2 boxes of clothes over to Zellers, but they had enough. Just wanted sweaters. Now I have 1 box of clothes to give. Anybody have an address where I could drop these off.
