does anyone know the procedure for obtaining a handicap hanging tag for a vehicle? thanks

You need to see your family doctor, you will need them to fill out specific paper work stating that you fill the requirements for the pass.You may need physio to sign off on it as well.

The form is on the SMD website. The link is below. It needs to be printed off & taken into the doctor for completion.

Don't be surprised when it costs you $15.00 either and also when you see lots of uncaring people without tags parked in the handicapped spaces.

Don't be surprised when you see able bodied people pull into the handicapped stall, hang their tag and run into the store. Some people have differing idea of using a hang tag as a parking aid.

don't be surprised when people think you are abusing the system when you have a tag, just because you're not in a wheelchair of have a cane. There are many invisible illnesses that cause mobility issues, and you wouldn't know people have an illness just by looking at them!

When you see someone jump out of their vehicle, and run into the store, it makes most reasonable people question the disability tag. Their action, not there looks tell the tale.

I agree there too! I see that often, so you wonder!!

I am one of those people that would bounce out of my car at The beginning of my trip but be crawling back to it by the end. Don’t judge others by their looks. If they have a tag, trust that they need it. Don’t add more stress to their life by giving them “the look” and glaring at them in hopes of making them feel guilty. Not all illnesses/disabilities are seen by the eye.

Nobody said glaring or given looks, just what was seen that’s all. All is good!

Are many physical disabilities that you cannot see. Example diabetic neuropathy, nerve pain in your legs, fibromyalgia, cancer etc.Often people with multiple sclerosis are still mobile but tire out extremely easy. These are just a few of the examples. A doctor has to sign the documentation justifying the handicap tag.

My mother has a parking pass and is able to walk short distances. She doesn’t always grab her walker out of the trunk, but she will use the scooter inside. If anyone dared to say anything to or about her for WALKING from her car to the store, they’d have to say it to ME. Not every disability can be seen. Don’t judge

Keep in mind some people live in pain or carry that disability. Sometimes it'll take a few days to get up the energy to muster a visit to get their groceries.  
 
How they carry themselves on the way in, may not be the same as how they carry themselves out.

A year ago I fell and severely broke my hip. By the time I got well enough to get energy to apply I am mobile enough not to need it.  
 
I am thankful for stores who supply wheelchair or scooters. I have observed even these being fraudulently used.  
 
My therapist instructed me that now that I can walk to do so. Actually walking is one of the best exercise. Of late I noticed my strength has improved.  
 
Selfish people hurt themselves by taking shortcuts.

Because walking is best for you, you think it is best for everyone? It doesn't work that way. It really doesn't.  
 
I think some people have pathetic lives when they are able bodied people and have to pay so much attention to who is parking in the handicap spots-then feel authorized to judge if a person should or shouldn't park there.

I have done exactly what tlr has witnessed. I am there to pick up my mother who has trouble even getting to the handicap stall. After I drop her off at the door, I go do other errands so take the decal off as it can block your view when driving. Then when I go back to pick her up, I park in the handicap spot, put the decal back in the window, and probably jog into the mall to get her. I'm not parking there for me, but for her. Please don't shoot me.

The op asked a simple question. Why on earth does everyone feel it is so important to rip apart people who have something they need? What an unhealthy way to exist!
