I can't say much to the dr but do think a doula could be a great addition to your birth team. When you mention wanting someone to help comfort and support you I think right away about how amazing doula's are at just that! There is a great team of them in Brandon and perhaps some near you as well. Have you thought about applying to be a midwife patient? Wishing you luck with whatever decision you make. And whatever health care provider you end up with, having someone there specifically to support you can go a very long way.

When I went into labor with my daughter many yrs ago when my regular ob went on vacation. I found him to be very ppl friendly, pleasant, and easy to talk to. It was my first so he was very helpful in talking to me about my labor and how it was going etc. I remember also cracking jokes with him while delivering. I had a epidural as I was having trbl getting her out but everyones diff and they will listen to your birthing plans. The nurses are also awesome too! That being said everyones diff and their experiences are diff too so find someone that works for you and makes you comfortable. Congrats!!

I had him for the last of my 3 pregnancies. I didn’t like him at all. He wouldn’t talk or explain things, and was very hard to read. I didn’t think he had any bedside manner. I’m not saying he’s not a good doctor, I’m sure he is, but I just never felt comfortable with him. I went home in tears from appts with him many times. And I wasn’t a first time mom and I didn’t need hand holding, but there were complications with this pregnancy that I didn’t have with my first two and ultimately had a premature baby. I would’ve preferred a doctor that was a little more approachable and better at discussing things. Just my experience, everyone’s different

are my recommendations if it isn’t too late to sign up for them. I have nothing but positive things to say about them.

I had Dr.Shumnugan when I miscarried with my first and then with both my subsequent pregnancies. He didn't deliver my first as he wasn't on call but he did deliver my second. I thought he was a great doctor and easy to talk to. I never had any issues and would recommend him to anyone. You will always hear good and bad things about health care professionals..no matter how good they are

OP, when you go into labor and deliver, it will be the on-call OBGyn who is called in. You might get the same one that you see in the office, but you very well might get one of the others whom you have not met.

Honestly every doctor will have their good and bad reviews. I have had every single OB in Brandon, and I can honestly say they all do their jobs well. The doctor you get will be luck of the draw. Some don't like helms, but I enjoyed him. Some don't like Adkintola (sp? Sorry), but I liked him. Some don't like Dr Parr, I loved her. And honestly , in that moment you won't be thinking of too much. That being said, Your nurse will be your primary caregiver for 95% of your labor, not the doctor, they only come right at the end.... I've had nurses be my solid rock, and I've sent nurses out of the room.... again , luck of the draw. Brandon has a very good delivery ward, I wouldn't decide to not go because of the word of some people. I know a handful of people that will only see Shimmigin (sp? Sorry !!). I would suggest a doula, or atleast tell your primary nurse watching you, that you would like things explained to you. I've had midwives too, but in that moment of that final phase I can honestly say there wasn't much of a difference. Everyone in the room has a job to do, and they all do it well.

Unless you have a midwife than most of the work is done by the nurses. My first I only saw the doctor when he checked on my test results (right before they realized I was in labor) and after I had been pushing for awhile. The rest of the time it was the nurses who dealt with everything. I had dr. Akintola for my pregnancy but Shumigan delivered, he was fine but I barely dealt with him. My sister had him for her pregnancies and really liked him.  
 
My second was born before I got to the hospital and my midwife did most of my care afterwards so only one experience with a doctor but the hospital is nice!

It doesn't matter who you see as an OB/GYN if all you're concerned about is your labour and delivery. Once you go into labour and are on ward you are in the hands of whoever is on shift at that time. You will have a nurse around a lot, dr will pop in periodically through labour and maybe deliver if they're there in time when the nurses say you're close.  
 
The doc you see through your pregnancy won't be the one who delivers unless it is their day (or you use a midwife).  
 
That's just how Brandon rolls now as we're too short staffed on specialists, and they all need lives outside of the hospital too

A bunch of new midwives just graduated, they now need to open some positions for them so we all have more access to the care they provide!

I had him many years ago. He was fine. I didn't love him, I didn't hate him. At 31 weeks, you won't see him all that much.  
 
BUT if it's labor you are concerned about Brandon now has very nice rooms, its the nurse who is with you 95% of the time (I had great nurses), and the Dr is only called in to deliver. You will get who is on call at the time, who may not be your Dr. So your concerns about epidural, etc will be with who is on call, not necessarily Dr S. I did have him, I had a high risk preganancy (was seen regularly at HSC throughout my pregnanacy). I had an epidural as was at risk for an emergency C-section. I know he would have preferred for me to have a C-section but respected my wishes and I was able to have a "natural" delivery, but with the back-up option of already having an epidural in place in the case of an emergency.
